After graduating from their music studies in 2016 at the University of Cape Town, Emma and Gerry started working on the project, writing material that would soon become their debut self-produced 8-track mini-album, “Bloom”. Released in May of 2018, the album garnered a lot of attention, not only in the South African music scene but also internationally. Two of their songs, “Hindsight” and “Nomadic Love”, have been played on BBC Radio and featured as part of the BBC Introducing show. The duo's debut single, “Break & Fall” was a winner of the Avid and Abbey Road International Song Contest, picked from nearly 5000 entries. The Los Angeles based producer and judge of the contest, John Feldmann (Goldfinger, Blink-182) said: “They have a great cinematic landscape to their music and are a good example of what modern music can be.” The duo had the opportunity to travel to Abbey Road Studios in London for the mastering of this winning song.
Soon after the release, Apple Music showcased EMERGER as their New Artist Spotlight, featuring their songs on prominent playlists on the streaming platform, including Apple Music’s Best of 2018 playlist.
“Bloom” was written, recorded and produced by the duo in their home studio. To finish it off, some of South Africa’s best mixing engineers worked on the mini-album, with mastering by Christian Wright (Radiohead, Coldplay) at Abbey Road Studios. The duo attended the mastering session at Abbey Road in London.
